Orbea History and Information

Orbea Bikes, a distinguished name in the bicycle industry, has a rich history that dates back to 1840. Founded by Juan Manuel, Mateo, and Casimiro Orbea in Eibar, Basque Country, Spain, the company originally manufactured rifles and guns.

In 1930, Orbea transitioned into the bicycle business, marking its presence in the Tour de France as early as 1934.

The company faced financial challenges in 1969, leading to its transformation into a cooperative by its employees. This pivotal change moved the company's operations to Mallabia, Spain, where they built their first dedicated bicycle factory. Orbea's focus shifted to producing leisure bikes for the Spanish and European markets.

In the 1980s, Orbea re-entered competitive road cycling with notable Spanish cyclists Pedro Delgado, Jokin Mújika, and Pello Ruiz Cabestany leading the team. They participated in major cycling events like the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.

Orbea's venture into manufacturing mountain bikes began in 1989, expanding its range and solidifying its position in the bicycle industry.

Design and Build Quality

The Orbea Rise H15 stands out with its sleek, integrated design. The motor and battery are seamlessly incorporated into the frame, offering a refined look that challenges traditional e-bike aesthetics. The quality of the frame, whether in alloy or carbon, is exceptional, with smooth welds and a sturdy build that promises longevity and performance.

Performance and Handling

This e-MTB excels in its natural ride feel, thanks to the Shimano EP8 RS motor and well-calibrated power delivery. The bike's handling is a standout feature, providing agility and confidence on both climbs and descents. Its playful character converts trail features into fun challenges, supported by a sensitive and efficient Fox suspension system.

Weight and Portability

Weighing in at around 21.08 kg for the alloy version, the Rise H15 is on the heavier side compared to its carbon counterpart. This added weight, primarily due to the larger battery, slightly impacts its portability and maneuverability, especially during transport.

Battery Life and Efficiency

The 540 Wh battery in the alloy version offers a commendable balance between weight and range. The option for a range extender further enhances its versatility, though at the cost of additional weight. The bike's efficiency, however, makes the most of the available battery capacity, delivering extended rides with less frequent charging needs.

Customization and Extras

Orbea's MyO configurator is a major plus, allowing riders to personalize their bike's specifications and appearance. However, the absence of everyday accessories like mudguards and a kickstand might require additional investment for those looking for a more utility-focused e-bike.

Price and Value

The Orbea Rise H15 is priced within the mid-range segment. While it offers excellent performance and quality, the price might be a consideration for budget-conscious buyers.

Overall Impression

The Orbea Rise H15 is a well-rounded e-MTB that combines the thrill of traditional mountain biking with the advantages of pedal-assist technology. Its standout features include a natural riding feel, playful handling, and robust build quality. While its weight and price are considerations, the bike's performance and customizable options make it a strong contender in the e-bike market.

Pricing and Availability

You should expect the Orbea Rise H15 to cost around $7,000 for a new model. Although a lot of online retailers list this bike in their catalog, you may struggle to find a store that has them in stock.

I don't know if Orbea has completely stopped building this model but it's hard to find them for sale anywhere but a second-hand website.

When I researched the bike for this review, I found quite a few bikes for sale between $5,000 and $7,000 on eBay.

Warranty

Orbea's warranty policy includes both a Limited Warranty and a Lifetime Warranty. The Limited Warranty covers products against manufacturing defects for two years from the purchase date and is compatible with warranties offered by manufacturers of individual components on Orbea bicycles. This warranty, however, does not cover labor for part replacement, wear and tear of perishable elements, or damage from negligent use, non-original accessories, or inappropriate maintenance.

The Lifetime Warranty offers lifetime coverage on frames and rigid forks for defects like breakage or cracking. This warranty extends to faulty paint, varnish, and corrosion for one year beyond the statutory warranty. It is available only to original purchasers who register their bicycle or frame within 30 days of purchase. Like the Limited Warranty, it does not cover damage from negligent use, non-original accessories, or poor maintenance.

For both warranties, claims must be processed through the point of sale or an official Orbea distributor. Orbea may replace non-conforming products with similar items or offer a proportional discount on a new purchase if replacement isn't feasible. The warranty doesn't cover personal injuries from malfunction or traffic accidents. Additionally, shipping costs for warranty claims are covered by Orbea if processed through the original distributor.
